FESTIVAL MIAMI 2005 MAKES A MUSICAL SPLASH!

Coral Gables, FL – After a long, hot summer, do you need to cool off with a refreshing array of music?  Then plunge into the 22nd Gala Season of Festival Miami 2005. Presented by the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Festival Miami 2005 will showcase 23 sensational concerts over five weeks from September 24 to October 29th, 2005

Festival Miami 2005 soars from strings to swing and bossa nova to bebop. “Festival Miami provides an exciting way for South Florida to experience world-class music in a first-class setting. The Festival also offers our students the priceless educational experience of working with some of music’s greatest artists,” states William Hipp, Dean of the Frost School of Music and Festival Miami founder.

Community outreach is an important facet of Festival Miami’s mission, and the Frost School of Music extends an invitation to the community to attend all of the wonderful master classes Festival guest artists conduct while on campus. These classes are free and open to the public, and a complete list will be released at a later date. Additionally several of the scheduled concerts are also free and open to the public.

This year’s cover artwork was created especially for Festival Miami 2005 by Xavier Cortada, a renowned Miami artist and UM law school alumnus. The stunning cover presents a bold and colorful blend of musical instruments set adrift against playful waves and deep blue sky.

Festival Miami 2005 kicks off on September 24th with a Gala Opening Night ConcertGems and Baubles. Internationally acclaimed soprano, Helen Donath, joins the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra for an evening of song conducted by Thomas Sleeper.  Enjoy music ranging from the passion of Bizet’s Carmen to the sheer joy of My Fair Lady. The UMSO, conducted by Thomas Sleeper, will also perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Sibelius’ glorious Symphony No. 5.

The stars will definitely be out when Festival Miami 2005 brings two singularly popular artists to the Gusman Concert Hall stage.  On Saturday, October 15th hold on tight for a jamming evening with Grammy winning singer and songwriter, Jon Secada in Concert! He will be joined by the Frost School’s Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble for an evening of jazz and Latin music. Then on Saturday October 22nd the incomparable Marvin Hamlisch – One Man Show! will be front and center. Joined by singer Mark McVey, this award-winning composer will share some of his most show-stopping hits, including music from A Chorus Line, The Sting and The Way We Were.

Classical highlights of this year’s Festival include An Evening of Russian Music; the Brno Chamber Soloists in their North American debut; the universally acclaimed Emerson String Quartet with two evening concerts; violinist Leila Josefowicz; the world premiere of Roberto Sierra’s Sinfonia No. 2 and much, much more.

Additional Festival Miami 2005 highlights include an evening featuring the  beloved boleros of yesterday, today and tomorrow; timeless bossa nova in a concert featuring Brazilian artists Antonio Adolfo and Carol Saboya;  a special 100th birthday tribute to Dizzy Gillespie featuring master trombonist, composer, arranger and teacher, Slide Hampton, accompanied by the University of Miami Concert Jazz Band; a rousing showcase of Broadway and cabaret favorites featuring Karen Morrow and Susan Egan; and the passionate flourish of a flamenco performance.

All performances are held at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located at the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music, 1314 Miller Drive, on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables Campus (unless otherwise noted in the attached schedule). Ticket prices range from $8 - $50 per person, including senior and students rates.  Opening and closing nights also offer a special ticket for $50 per person, which includes a VIP reception.
