THE STAMPS FAMILY DISTINGUISHED VISITORS SERIES
2005 - 2006 SEASON
Coral Gables, FL – The Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami presents the 2005 - 2006 season of the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors Series. The Stamps Family series, which runs from October 7, 2005 through March 3, 2006, brings in music industry leaders and scholars – from performers to composers to producers – to work with music students and share their insights into the very dynamic and evolving business of music. In its fourth year, the 2005-06 series brings four exceptional leaders in their fields to UM’s Coral Gables Campus, and all master classes, workshops and lectures are free and open to the public.
The 2005 – 2006 Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors are:
Jerry Herman has the distinction of being the only composer-lyricist in history to have had three musicals that ran more than 1,500 consecutive performances on Broadway. His first Broadway show was Milk and Honey (1961), followed by Hello, Dolly! (1964), Mame (1966), Dear World (1969), Mack & Mabel (1974), The Grand Tour (1979), La Cage (1983) and Jerry’s Girls (1985). Showtune, a revue of his life’s work, is performing in regional theaters around the country. On Saturday, October 8 at 12:30 p.m., Jerry will join Karen Morrow and Susan Egan, both singers and actresses with extensive west and east coast credits, for an interview with Michael Kerker, director of musical theatre for ASCAP. The discussion is free and open to the public and will be held at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus.
Marvin Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility as well as substance. He has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, and three Golden Globe awards. His groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize. He is the composer of more than 40 motion picture scores, including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men And A Baby, Ice Castles, Take The Money And Run, Bananas and Save The Tiger. Marvin will hold a master class on Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gusman. Then later that evening as part of Festival Miami 2005, at 8 pm, join Marvin for an unforgettable concert with singer Mark McVey. Tickets are $50/$40/$30/$20.
Russell Sherman, a masterful pianist, has a reputation as a virtuoso and interpreter of remarkable intelligence. He has performed with the country’s leading orchestras, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco, and in prestigious keyboard series from coast to coast. Abroad, his artistry has been heard in major cities in Europe, South America, and Asia. Russell will give a special piano recital on Wednesday, November 9th at 8 pm at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall. Tickets are General Admission $15; Seniors $10; Students $5. On November 11th at 12:15 pm to 2:15 pm, Russell will give a master class at the Victor E. Clarke Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Donald A. Hodges is Covington Distinguished Professor of Music Education and director of the Music Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Hodges is contributing editor of the Handbook of Music Psychology and the accompanying Multimedia Companion and has published numerous book chapters, articles, and research papers in music education and music psychology. He has served on the editorial boards of Music Educators Journal and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. He has also served on scientific organizing and review committees for the International Society for Music Medicine and the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, and is Chair of the Music Perception and Cognition Special Research Interest Group (Music Educators National Conference) and Research Chair for NCMEA. As part of the Stamps series, Hodges will be a visiting lecturer at the Frost School of Music from March 1 – 3, 2006 – locations and times to be announced.
