Auditions are held on campus and at regional sites in the United States and around the world. They are scheduled in the order that completed Frost School of Music applications and fees are received. Be sure to indicate your desired audition date on your application.

Every applicant to the Frost School of Music must complete an audition regardless of major.

All applicants wishing to complete a jazz or contemporary instrumental/vocal audition must pass a prescreening audition.  Applicants must submit the University of Miami application, Frost School of Music (FSOM) Supplemental Application, and submit a cd/dvd by December 1 to the FSOM Admission Office .  Your cd/dvd will not be reviewed by faculty until both applications and applicable fees are received.

Faculty will review the prescreening submissions and an invitation to audition will be extended to selected applicants.  If selected to audition, you will receive your audition confirmation email in late December.

Please visit the jazz or contemporary audition page (links provided below) for more information on the requirements for your instrument.

Classical applicants do not need to submit prescreening materials.

Portfolios: Undergraduate students majoring in Music Composition or Commercial Music must submit a portfolio of their compositions in addition to performing an audition on either an instrument or voice.  Please visit the Music Theory and Composition page for the requirements.  The deadline for portfolio submissions is February 1st.

Undergraduate students majoring in Music Engineering Technology have the option to have a portfolio of their work reviewed by faculty online in addition to performing an audition on either an instrument or voice.  Please visit the Music Engineering page for the requirements.  The deadline for portfolio submissions is February 1st.

On-campus auditions are preferred and provide a full day of activities for students and parents. In addition to the audition with the faculty, you’ll have many opportunities to meet Frost School students. Audition days begin with an information session including presentations from the Frost School of Music Office of Admission, Frost School of Music Undergraduate Dean, University Office of Admission, and University Office of Financial Assistance Services.

An on-campus audition also provides students and parents with the opportunity to attend forums based on the student’s desired major and instrument group. For example, the Music Engineering Forum may be hosting a guest speaker on the latest recording development. At the String Forum, students may be performing or a guest artist may be leading a master class. Many of the School's ensembles will be rehearsing and are open for observation. The University Office of Admission also provides tours of the University three times during the day, as well as a general University of Miami information session.

If an on-campus audition is not feasible, an audition at a regional site is preferable to a recorded audition. Nevertheless, a good quality CD/DVD/Videotape fulfilling the audition requirements is acceptable from students who reside in areas north of Orlando, Florida. Only CD/DVD/Videotapes from active applicants will be reviewed by the faculty. Those recordings and their containers should be clearly labeled with the applicant’s full name, birthdate, and instrument. Only one recording is necessary for both admission and scholarship consideration.

All applicants will take a Theory assessment at the time of their audition.
