Auditions
are held on campus, and in regional sites
in the United States and around the world. They are scheduled in
the order that completed applications and fees are received. Be
sure to indicate your desired audition date on the music application.
Auditions on campus are preferred and provide a full day of activities
for students and parents. In addition to the audition with the faculty,
many opportunities to meet students and faculty are scheduled. An
information session includes presentations from the Frost School
of Music Admission Office, Frost School of Music Undergraduate Dean,
University Office of Admission, and Office of Financial Assistance
Services. Students and parents are invited to attend forums. Forums,
based on major and instrument group, are attended by faculty and
students. A variety of activities occur. For example, at Music Engineering
Forum a guest speaker may be talking about the latest recording
development. At String Forum students may be performing or a guest
artist may present a master class. Many of the School's ensembles
will be rehearsing and are open for observation. The University
Office of Admission provides tours of the University three times
during the day.
If
an on campus audition is not feasible, an audition at a regional
site is preferable to a taped audition. Nevertheless, a good quality
cassette tape fulfilling the audition requirements is acceptable
from students who reside in areas north of Orlando, Florida. Only
tapes from active applicants will be reviewed by the faculty. Both
the cassette and its container should be clearly labeled with the
applicant's name, address, and instrument. Only one tape is necessary
for both admission and scholarship consideration.
The
audition dates are found on the Frost School of Music
Application.
All
students admitted to the Frost School of Music must be recommended
by the Faculty Audition Committee. Final acceptance to the University
of Miami is made by the Office of Admission only after all materials
requested by that office and the Frost School of Music have been
received and evaluated.
- Accompanists
are not provided. If you need an accompaniment, please either
bring an accompanist or bring your accompaniment prerecorded and
a play back unit. The Jamey Aebersold accompaniment recordings
are acceptable for jazz instruments.
- The
audition room will be equipped with a piano. You will need to
bring other instruments/equipment required for your audition.
- Percussionist:
perform the snare drum requirements and bring a tape on which
you have recorded your performance on the other instruments. Provide
copies of all music performed live and on the tape.
- Musical
Theatre: bring a videotape on which you have recorded your monologue.

At
the graduate level only performance majors are required to audition.
Master's degree applicants may submit an audition cassette tape
of the senior or comparable recital to the Graduate Admission Office.
An on-campus audition is required for doctoral students. On-campus
auditions for graduate students are scheduled independently of the
audition days for undergraduates.
Except
for the instruments and programs indicated,
there are no specific repertoire and other requirements for graduate
auditions. The undergraduate audition requirements provide a general
perspective on the nature of auditions for the various instruments
and programs, and it is recommended that students prepare two or
three contrasting etudes or solos (or movements from a concerto
or sonata) which best demonstrate their tone, range, technique,
and lyric ability. Students auditioning on campus will also be asked
to demonstrate sightreading. Students desiring further information
for specific instruments and programs should contract the studio
teacher or program director.
