Auditions will be conducted using the following format. Some substitutions may be allowed with the permission of the University of Miami Trumpet Professor.
All major scales - 2 octaves when possible
One (1) etude of the applicant's choice that demonstrates the student's complete musical and technical abilities.
A minimum of one (1) movement of the applicant's choice from the following solos:
o Haydn Concerto
o Hummel Concerto
o Hindemith Sonata
o Kennan Sonata
o Stevens Sonata
A short sight reading exercise
Applicants for the Instrumental Performance program should also perform the following orchestral excerpts:
o Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition - Promenade
o Stravinsky - Petrushka; Ballerina's Dance
o Respighi - Pines of Rome; offstage solo
- Two
or three short tunes in a small group setting with drums, bass,
guitar, and/or piano that demonstrate your improvisational skills.
Include a variety of rhythmical feels or tempos (swing, Latin,
rock, ballad, etc.). You may include big band selections in which
you are a featured soloist (tape only).
- Optional
- Original compositions or arrangements.
On-Campus
Audition: In addition to prepared selections you may be asked
to demonstrate technical devices (scales, articulations), theoretical
knowledge (chord scales) and sight-read for rhythmical accuracy,
time feel, and phrasing
Regional auditions: Bring your accompaniment prerecorded
and a play back unit. The Jamey Aebersold accompaniment recordings
are acceptable.
Select
two to three contrasting études or solos (or movements from
a concerto or sonata) which best demonstrate your tone, range, technique,
and lyric ability. The following repertoire is recommended but similar
works may be substituted.
