Undergraduate Voice Audition Requirements

 

All auditions must be accompanied.

On-campus auditions - An accompanist will be provided. Applicants must provide original music for the accompanist.

Regional Auditions - Accompanists are not provided. Please either bring an accompanist or bring your accompaniment prerecorded and a play back unit.

A brief sight-reading, tonal retention and theory examination will be given at the time of the audition. Studio Music and Jazz majors will be asked to demonstrate improvisational skills.

Taped Auditions - Taped auditions are accepted for students living north of Orlando, Florida. All majors except Studio Music and Jazz must send an audio and video tape. Studio Music and Jazz Majors send only the audio tape. Tapes must be sent to the Music Admission Office and be received by February 1.

All majors except Musical Theatre and Studio Music and Jazz majors
  • Perform one classical art song or an aria in any language from an opera, oratorio, or operetta. The selection should demonstrate vocal range, phrasing ability, and interpretive skills.
  • Perform an additional memorized selection from one of the following categories:
    • Opera, oratorio, or operetta
    • Art song
    • Musical Theatre
  • All selections must be memorized.
Musical Theatre Majors
  • Perform two musical theatre selections contrasting in style, preferably one standard musical theatre ballad and one up-tempo (preferably belt).
  • Perform two contrasting, contemporary monologues, each no longer than 2 minutes.
  • Bring a headshot and resume, plus a repertoire sheet (listing songs you have studied).
  • For ON CAMPUS auditions only: 1) bring dance clothes, and 2) prepare your music for the accompanist (3-hole punched and double-sided).

Note
For those auditioning by tape: The videotape should include the items listed above. Be sure the videotape shows the applicant close up and in a long shot. A separate audio tape of the singing is required. Musical Theatre students applying with videotape should include additional excerpts from performance in plays, musicals, recitals, and concerts that demonstrate a wide range of acting ad singing ability.

Studio Music and Jazz Majors
  • Perform three memorized selections consisting of:
    • One ballad from the standard or jazz repertoire such as "Here's that Rainy Day", "The Nearness of You", "Misty", "Someone to Watch Over Me", or "What's New".
    • One up-tempo jazz or standard piece in swing style such as "Satin Doll", "Green Dolphin Street", or "In Other Words" ("Fly Me to the Moon").
    • One song from the contemporary pop repertoire with a rock, funk or disco flavor in a medium to bright tempo.
      Accompaniment tapes are acceptable.
  • Applicants will be asked to demonstrate some improvisational and sight-reading abilities however, these are not criteria for admission.

    On campus auditions
    are always preferred and will include sightreading, scales, and a brief interview.

    Regional auditions: Bring your accompaniment for the jazz selections prerecorded and a play back unit. The Jamey Aebersold accompaniment recordings are acceptable. Sightreading, scales, and a brief interview will be included.



 

 

Graduate Voice Audition Requirements

 
Master of Music in Vocal Performance
  • 5 pieces in 4 languages (English, French, German and Italian), representing at least 4 historical musical periods, to include one operatic aria can be included in the group of five.  A pianist will be provided.
  • A sample of scholarly writing.  This may be a term paper from a prior course in music or another academic class.
  • In order to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship, you must submit a teaching video at the time of your audition. Please include your teaching of a male and female student and, if possible, include an example of teaching musical theater repertoire and technique.

 

Doctoral of Musical Arts - Vocal Performance
  • 5 selections in at least 4 languages, representing at least 4 historical musical periods, to include one operatic aria and one baroque aria with recitative. 
  • A sample of scholarly writing.  This may be a term paper from a prior course in music or another academic class.
  • In order to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship, you must submit a teaching video at the time of your audition. Please include your teaching of a male and female student and, if possible, include an example of teaching musical theater repertoire and technique.

 

Doctor in Musical Arts--Vocal Pedagogy and Performance
  • 5 selections in at least 4 languages, representing at least 4 historical musical periods, to include one operatic aria and one baroque aria with recitative.
  • A sample of scholarly writing.  This may be a term paper from a prior course in music or another academic class.
  • In order to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship, you must submit a teaching video at the time of your audition. Please include your teaching of a male and female student and, if possible, include an example of teaching musical theater repertoire and technique.
  • A statement of your Philosophy of Teaching.
