Auditions will be conducted using the following format. Some
substitutions may be allowed with the permission of the
University of Miami Trumpet Professor.

All major scales - Two (2) octaves when possible.

One (1) etude of the applicant's choice that demonstrates the
student's complete musical and technical abilities.

At least one (1) movement from one of the following pieces (multiple pieces may be selected if desired):

Haydn Concerto

Hummel Concerto
Hindemith Sonata
Kennan Sonata
Stevens Sonata

  A short sight-reading exercise

Applicants for the Instrumental Performance program should
also perform the following orchestral excerpts:

Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition - Promenade

Stravinsky - Petrushka; Ballerina's Dance
Respighi - Pines of Rome; offstage solo
 

Prescreening - Requirements are the same as listed below.

Two or three short tunes in a small group setting with
drums, bass, guitar, and/or piano that demonstrate your improvisational skills. Include a variety of rhythmical feels or tempos (swing, Latin, rock, ballad, etc.). You may include big band selections in which you are a featured soloist (recording only).

Optional - Original compositions or arrangements.
   

On-Campus Audition: In addition to prepared selections you
may be asked to demonstrate technical devices (scales, articulations), theoretical knowledge (chord scales) and sight-read for rhythmical accuracy, time feel, and phrasing.

Regional Auditions: Bring your accompaniment pre-recorded
and a play back unit. The Jamey Aebersold accompaniment recordings are acceptable.




Select two to three contrasting etudes or solos (or movements from a concerto or sonata) which best demonstrate your tone, range, technique, and lyric ability. The following repertoire is recommended, but similar works may be substituted.
