Instrumental Performance majors - Perform the snare drum,
the mallet, and the timpani requirements.
All majors using jazz drumset as their principal
instrument - Perform the drumset requirements.
All other majors using classical percussion as
their principal instrument - Perform the snare drum and the mallet
requirements.
In addition to the above, you may enhance your audition by
performing requirements not listed for your major.
On-campus auditions are preferred. Sight-reading will be
required.
Regional Auditions: Perform the snare
drum requirements and
bring a recording on which you have recorded your performance on the
other instruments. Provide copies of all music performed live and
on the recording. Sight-reading will be required.
Recorded Auditions: State clearly before
each selection what will be played, etude number, name of solo, etc.
and include copies of each selection. Instrumental Performance majors
must also provide a videotape of the pieces included on the recording.
NOTE: All Instrumental Performance majors
must perform an
on-campus audition. No audition recordings or regional auditions are
accepted. |

An etude or piece that best demonstrates your ability.
|
|
|
Portions of both a rudimental and an orchestral solo,
which demonstrates your familiarity with these styles
(2-3 minutes each). |
|
Knowledge of all major and minor scales and arpeggios.
Play at least two major and two minor scales two octaves, as fast
and as accurately as possible.

|
An etude or piece that best demonstrates
your ability with 2 or 4 mallets. |

Prescreening -
Requirements are the same as listed below for recorded auditions.
On-Campus Auditions are preferred. At your audition, you will
demonstrate the following: |

|
Knowledge of the jazz idiom, traditional and modern,
at
various tempos;
|
|
Proficiency in the rock, funk, and fusion
styles;
|
|
|
Familiarity with Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and world
styles;
|
|
|
Soloing in various settings: trading fours, filling, and
improvising over an ostinato;
|
|
|
Chart reading in various styles |
A visit to campus, if
possible, is highly encouraged to give the prospective student the best
idea of what the Drumset Program has to offer. This also allows
you to get to know the faculty and students personally. These
visits do not have to occur on scheduled audition days, the best days to
come are Thursday and Friday. If you wish, your audition can occur
during your visit if you have passed the prescreening requirement and
been approved to audition, but you must have submitted both the university
application and the Frost School of Music application.

Perform each of the following:

One jazz piece in a trio or quartet setting with
a walking
bass line. Short solos ('fours') should be included.
|
|
|
One contemporary fusion or rock piece, played with an
appropriate rhythm section.
|
|
|
One selection with an Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian or world
rhythm.
|
|
|
One big band excerpt. |
|
|
|
Since musical interaction is essential, please use a live rhythm
section for your recording.
SNARE DRUM, MALLETS, AND TIMPANI ARE NO LONGER
PART OF THE DRUMSET CURRICULUM AND ARE NOT
REQUIRED FOR THE DRUMSET AUDITION. |
