Stephen F. Zdzinski is Associate Professor of Music
Education at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where he
teaches graduate courses in music education and supervises associate teachers.
Zdzinski received a B.M. in French Horn Performance and Music Education from the
Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and the M.M.E. & Ph.D. in Music
Education from Indiana University. His doctoral dissertation was awarded an
Honorable Mention in the Outstanding Dissertation in Music Education Award given
by the Council for Research in Music Education. His teaching experience includes
public and private school instrumental music teaching in Pennsylvania, New York,
New Jersey, and Indiana, and university teaching experience at the University of
South Carolina, Wayne State University, Indiana University, the University of
Toronto, and at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Zdzinski has published numerous articles in the Journal of Research in
Music Education, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education,
Contributions to Music Education, the Bulletin of the Council for Research in
Music Education, Boletân de Investigacion Educativo-Musical (Argentina), the
New Voice of Yue-Fu- Academic Periodical of Shenyang Conservatory
of Music (China), the International Journal of Music Education (Research
Edition), the Southeastern Journal of Music Education, Research
Perspectives in Music Education, Technological Directions in Music Learning
Ejournal, Piano Pedagogy Forum, Philosophy of Music Education Review, the
Pennsylvania Bulletin of Research in Music Education, Florida Music
Director, the Maryland Music Educator, the New York School Music
News, Music Educators Journal, and Our Children. Zdzinski's
research has centered on parental involvement in music, musical performance
measurement, special learners in music, music technology, and a study
identifying landmark articles in music education research.
A recent recipient of a $114,000 research grant from the NAMM Foundation’s
Sounds of Learning Project, Dr. Zdzinski has made presentations at
international, national and state music education conferences in the United
States, Great Britain, Spain, Finland, Norway, and Japan. He serves on the
editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education and of
Psychology of Music, and as music education representative for the Southern
Chapter of the College Music Society. Zdzinski is also a contributor to the
National Assessment of Education Progress Music Test & to three MENC
publications, Teaching Strategies for Implementing the National Standards in
Music, Syllabi for Music Methods Courses, and Readings on
Diversity, Inclusion, and Music for All. He is a member of MENC: The
National Association for Music Education, the Society for Research in Music
Education, Society for Music Teacher Education, the International Society for
Music Education, and the College Music Society.
