Hugh W. Harbison, Adjunct Assistant Professor (Trombone), has a B.M.
degree from Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of Emory Remington.
Other notable mentors include Denis Wick and Per Brevig. He received a M.M.
degree from the University of Miami, and has completed coursework for a D.M.A.
degree. He has performed a multitude of youth concerts with brass chamber groups
as well as five years with Arnold Grayson's early music consort. Harbison has
been the bass trombonist with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra since it's
inception, and with the Miami Philharmonic and Greater Miami Opera for several
years prior to that. He has appeared with the Aspen Chamber Symphony and Aspen
Festival Orchestra. At Aspen he met composer William Moylan who subsequently
composed for him the Concerto for bass trombone and orchestra. The piece received
its premiere with Harbison and the U of M orchestra under the direction of David
Becker.
