Ken Pohlmann is the director of the Music Engineering
Technology programs. He has been employed as a faculty member of the Frost
School of Music at the University of Miami in Coral Gables since 1977. He
was director of Recording Services, and occupied the positions of assistant
and associate professor. Since 1983 he has served as the Director of the
Music Engineering Technology program, and chaired the Music Media and Industry
department from 1993 to 1998; he is also a tenured full professor. He has
initiated new undergraduate and graduate courses in acoustics, digital audio,
advanced digital audio, internet audio and studio production and in 1986
founded the first Masters degree in Music Engineering in the United States.
He is the author of Principles of Digital Audio (4 editions), The Compact Disc Handbook (2 editions), and co-author of two other books: Writing for New Media and Advanced Digital Audio. Since 1982 he has written over 2,000 articles for audio magazines including Audio magazine, dB magazine, Car Stereo Review, CD Review, Electronics Australia, Guitar Player magazine, Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, Laserdisk Professional, Mix Magazine, Pro Audio Review, Sound and Vision, Scientific American, Stereo Review, and Video magazine. He is contributing editor for Mobile Entertainment magazine, contributing editor and columnist for Sound & Vision magazine. Mr. Pohlmann co-founded Microcomputer Arts, Inc. (1980), International Business Information Systems Inc. (1982), U.S. Digital Disc Corporation (1985) and Hammer Laboratories (1986). He chaired the Audio Engineering Society's International Conference on Digital Audio in Toronto in 1989, and co-chaired the Audio Engineering Society's International Conference on Internet Audio in Seattle in 1997. He was twice presented the AES Board of Governor's Award (1989 and 1998) and an AES Fellowship Award (1990) by the Audio Engineering Society for his work as an educator and author in the field of audio engineering. In 1991 he was elected to serve on the AES Board of Governors, and in 1993 to serve as the AES Vice President of the Eastern U.S. and Canada Region. In 1992 he was given the Philip Frost Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. He served as a non-board member of the National Public Radio Distribution/Interconnection Committee (2000 - 2003). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the New World Symphony. Mr. Pohlmann also serves as a consultant in the field of digital audio technology including the development of optical disc and signal processing hardware, development of enabling technologies such as data compression algorithms, the authoring of compact disc multimedia titles, and the development of mobile audio systems for American, Japanese, Korean and European automobile manufacturers. He also serves as an expert witness in technology patent infringement and other engineering-related litigation. Mr. Pohlmann holds B.S. (1974) and M.S. (1976) degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
