High school students from around the state of Florida are invited each year to the University of Miami campus to participate in master classes with Frost School of Music faculty; take part in an ensemble; and perform as part of the Frost School’s Honor Band or Honor Choir. Several hundred students now participate in these annual outreach programs, which the Frost School of Music began offering more than 25 years ago.

The Music Education Program at the Frost School of Music invites to campus 150+ talented high school instrumentalists from around Florida to participate in two full days of rehearsals, master classes by Frost School artist faculty, and a final concert performed to full houses in Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on the campus of the University of Miami.

Band directors throughout the state are invited to recommend students for the Honor Band Festival during the month of October. An application is completed by the student, signed by their director, and returned to the Honor Band Festival Office in November. In December, directors are notified of decisions regarding participation. During a weekend in February, two full days of activities take place for selected students, including part and chair placement auditions, full ensemble rehearsals, and instrumental clinics by the artist faculty of the Frost School. All of these activities are open to directors.

There are two performing groups, a 52-member Festival Wind ensemble and a 100-member Festival Symphonic Band, conducted by outstanding guest conductors from across the country and from the Frost School of Music. The culminating event is a free concert on Saturday evening.
