Prospective Students FAQs

Q) Can you send me more information on the music engineering program?

A: If you'd like general information from the Frost School of Music, which discusses the music engineering program and has details about admission requirements, then submit this form and we will mail you some.  If you are looking for information more specific to the music engineering program, then take our on-line tour.

Q) How is the job placement for students graduating from the music engineering program?

A: As far as job placement is concerned, UM has several "advantages."  Two of the major ones are a well established and supportive alumni base and Ken Pohlmann's name behind it.  If you haven't already, I would say you should check out the "Alumni" portion of our website.  There you can find a list of companies our graduates are working at and also the album credits they have been recognized on.  I think this, in itself, speaks volumes for the program.

Of course, most anyone in the business recognizes Ken Pohlmann's name and "his" program at UM.  After all, he's been here at UM for over 20 years and is well published and respected in the industry.

To attest to the Alumni support, also consider that once a week we have a class called the Music Engineering Forum - where audio industry representatives come to campus and speak to the students.  Usually they are alumni (but, not always) who talk of their career since graduation and try to lend some industry insight to the students.  These alumni fund their own trips and do it just to "give back" to the program that made them successful.

Finally, we have an internal e-mail distribution list called MUE Net, for current students and alumni which networks all of us together.  I'd say at least once every other week (on average) someone is sending out a job description or looking for other UM students to hire.

Q)  Any suggestions for finding a place to live near campus?

A:
First, besides on campus, let me mention the "popular" areas to live including Coral Gables (close), Kendall (farther and nicer), Coconut Grove (cool, more expensive, not as close), Doral (farther, but nicer) and Miami Beach (really cool, expensive, far and bad commute).  All are technically considered Miami.  The first resource I would suggest is the University's Commuter Affairs off-campus housing listing.  Next is the Miami Herald classifieds - search their residential listings for keywords like "UM" if you want close to campus.

Q)  Do I have to audition on an instrument to get accepted?

A:  All undergraduates accepted to the school of music must be recommended by the faculty audition committee.  Thus, undergraduate applicants must audition.

However, graduate music engineering graduate students do NOT need to audition.  Only graduate performance majors need to audition.  However, graduates must submit three letters of recommendation and have taken the GRE to be considered for the graduate music engineering program.

More questions about entrance requirements for the music engineering degree can usually be answered by going to the Frost School of Music's prospective student page

Q) Do I have to take the GRE, TOEFL to apply to your graduate program?

Q) What kind of funding/research opportunities are available for graduate students?

A:  The Music Engineering (MUE) Graduate program does not have your "conventional" research-for-funding that other engineering graduate schools might have.  This is mostly because we want your thesis and research to be completely up to you, and not dictated by some company that is funding you.  However, if you have a company in mind that would be willing to support your original thesis ideas, this situation would be considered.  However, it is not the norm.

The Music Engineering department does provide one full scholarship (9 credits + stipend) which is usually divided between two MUE grad students. The teaching workload varies from year to year, and the tuition waiver is divided according to workload and teaching schedules. Typically, these scholarships are reserved for the "senior" graduate students who have been at UM for more than one semester.  For example, a 3-credit tuition waiver is usually awarded to the graduate student who teaches MMI 013 (Music Engineering Forum). Other awards vary.

The School of Music in addition provides one full scholarship (9 credits + stipend) for a network administrator.  Currently, this position is held by a music engineering graduate student, but is not necessarily reserved for one (as the other scholarship is).

Also, you should ask to be considered for the 1/3 tuition waiver (3 credits).  Any graduate student may request to be considered for this award (and it usually is granted), but you are not automatically considered for it.  So ask either the Music Engineering Director or the Frost School of Music Dean of graduate studies to be considered.

Finally, one popular scholarship (for $3,000 per semester) for graduate music engineers to apply for is the Audio Engineering Society Educational Foundation grant.  On several occasions UM grad. students have been given this award.

MuE Alumni FAQs

Q) How do I tell everyone about a job opening I know of ?

A: Rather than e-mailing Ken Pohlmann, the best way is to distribute the information yourself - either through the MUE distribution lists or by posting it on the MUE job bulletin board.  See the MUE Net for an electronic form to submit, or to view the addresses of the various mailing lists we maintain.
