Prospective Students FAQs
Q) Can you send me more information on the music engineering program? A: If you'd like general information from the Frost School of Music, which discusses the music engineering program and has details about admission requirements, then submit this form and we will mail you some. If you are looking for information more specific to the music engineering program, then take our on-line tour.
Q) How is the job placement for students graduating from the music engineering program? A: As far as job placement is concerned, UM has several "advantages." Two of the major ones are a well established and supportive alumni base and Ken Pohlmann's name behind it. If you haven't already, I would say you should check out the "Alumni" portion of our website. There you can find a list of companies our graduates are working at and also the album credits they have been recognized on. I think this, in itself, speaks volumes for the program. Of course, most anyone in the business recognizes Ken Pohlmann's name and "his" program at UM. After all, he's been here at UM for over 20 years and is well published and respected in the industry. To attest to the Alumni support, also consider that once a week we have a class called the Music Engineering Forum - where audio industry representatives come to campus and speak to the students. Usually they are alumni (but, not always) who talk of their career since graduation and try to lend some industry insight to the students. These alumni fund their own trips and do it just to "give back" to the program that made them successful. Finally, we have an internal e-mail distribution list called MUE Net, for current students and alumni which networks all of us together. I'd say at least once every other week (on average) someone is sending out a job description or looking for other UM students to hire.
Q) What is the process/requirements for
applying to the program?
Q) Do I have to audition on an instrument to get accepted? A: All undergraduates accepted to the school of music must be recommended by the faculty audition committee. Thus, undergraduate applicants must audition.
However, graduate music engineering graduate students do NOT need to audition. Only graduate performance majors need to audition. However, graduates must submit three letters of recommendation and have taken the GRE to be considered for the graduate music engineering program.
More questions about entrance requirements for the music engineering degree can usually be answered by going to the Frost School of Music's prospective student page
Q) Do I have to have an engineering degree to get into the graduate program?
A: Yes.
Q) Do I have to take the GRE, TOEFL to apply to your graduate program?
A. Applicants must submit their GRE scores and three letters of
recommendation in order to be considered for admission to the graduate music engineering
program. There is no minimum score in order to be considered for the program.
A: The Music Engineering (MUE) Graduate program does not have your
"conventional" research-for-funding that other engineering graduate schools
might have. This is mostly because we want your thesis and research to be
completely up to you, and not dictated by some company that is funding you. However,
if you have a company in mind that would be willing to support your original thesis ideas,
this situation would be considered. However, it is not the norm. |
