weeks.jpg (36462 bytes)The L. Austin Weeks Recording Studio is a professional audio recording facility that is the heart of the Music Engineering program at UM. It has several isolation areas for different types of instrumental performance needs, including a drum booth, vocal alcove, and sound locks. The main studio is spacious enough for string sections and other group performance needs. It features a high ceiling and Yamaha grand piano.

The control room houses a 48-input Euphonix S5 digital console and multitrack hard-disk recorder. For details on the control room specifications, please see the equipment list.  You can also view a partial list of our microphone selection.   There is also an integrated "house sync" for video, digital multi-track, ProTools and MIDI synchronization.

The studio is used for recording sessions, coursework and hands-on workshops. Freshman take workshops on the basics of music recording their first semester and on studio technology/maintenance their second semester. During the sophomore year, students take classes where they alternate between performing and recording songs. By junior year, the students have the ability to earn a studio license and book their own studio sessions. In addition, junior year students learn about audio for video and the use of the studio’s synchronization and post-production capabilities.

Junior and senior students can pursue more sophisticated studio production techniques with a combination of advanced workshops, their own session work, and also by working on the engineering staff in cooperation with the jazz and writing/production students. The Weeks Recording Studio provides ample opportunity for Music Engineering majors to gain practical hands-on experience in preparation for careers in the music recording industry.
