Deciding on the topic.Researching the topic.Writing the paper.Formatting and style.
The Topic
Select a topic that is appropriate for the course.
The topic must be relevant to the material covered in the course.  It would not be appropriate to do a paper on selecting oboe reeds in a course on vocal pedagogy!

Select a topic that you are interested in.
Your attitude toward the paper will in large part determine its quality.  If you are going to spend the time to necessary to do the research, review the research, organize the research, outline the paper, write the paper, type the paper in the appropriate style, and format the paper appropriately, you will have a large investment in your time and energy.  If you like the topic, you will be more likely to put the time into the paper required to get a good grade.

Don't let the topic be too big.
Do not be over enthusiastic about how much you can cover in a single paper.  Limit the topic to what you can realistically accomplish in the time you have available to prepare and write the paper.  A topic such as "The Child's Singing Voice" is much too broad.  A more realistic topic might be "Proper Vocal Tone for the Young Child."
